what, how, and when I eat?

W henever the talk turns to the science of

weight loss, you hear the word metabolism a lot.

It is often thought of as the Holy Grail of weight

loss. Find a way to boost metabolism and the

pounds will fall off. And if it is possible to speed

up the metabolism without making any

changes in how you live your life, so much the

better!

It is easy to believe the pseudoscience that

talks up ways to boost metabolism to lose

weight. This chapter explores the realities

behind foods, food combinations, meal timing,

and other factors that may or may not speed up

metabolism and contribute to weight loss.

Believers Beware!

Weight loss is about burning more calories than you eat. The traditional way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. But the secret of superior weight loss is to speed up metabolism so that weight is lost automatically. After all, it is the body’s metabolism that sets the pace for burning calories.

Rather than accept a slow metabolism, it makes more sense to make the one you have go faster. There are lots of magazine articles and television programs explaining that what and how we eat and exercise affects our metabolism. The good news is that you can boost your metabolism with virtually no effort. So it makes sense that making some minor changes in those areas can create a metabolic advantage that speeds weight loss. There are so many choices—exercises, special foods and food combinations, and dozens of other things—all designed to raise the body’s metabolism. Going this route makes weight loss faster and easier.

Kernels of Truth

Since the beginning of time, people have expanded the powers of food beyond simply meeting nutritional and energy needs. The belief that specific foods can cure health problems is a longstanding cultural tradition: eating chicken soup to cure a cold and oysters to enhance fertility are just two examples. We really want to believe in the power of foods. It is not surprising that specific foods and eating regimens have made their way into the folklore of weight loss. With great optimism, people embrace the latest new food or way of eating with the hope that it will put them on the path to sustained weight loss.

The magic of a single solution for weight loss focuses on just one aspect of a food, supplement, or activity. This is similar to the tale about the three blind men and the elephant: Three blind men are asked to describe an elephant. One of them touches the trunk, another touches the tail, and the third touches the foot. Each of the blind men accurately describes what he touched, but none of them can describe the elephant because the animal is bigger than a single body part.
